SOLD AS NEW ZEALAND
TASMANIAN APPLES
NELSONIAN’S EXPERIENCE IN ENGLAND
While Air. A. E. Dee. of Nelson, wlio is at present in England, was on avisit to Nottingham lie was the guest of a big maniiTatt.iirer, who expressed the opinion,, in reply to a question, that lie did not -think very highly of New Zealand apples judging by those lie had purchased. Mr. Dee expressed surprise, ami later went to a shop and asked for some New Zealand Stunners. The shop asistant, however, endeavoured to palm off' Tasmanian apples, and on Mr. Dee protesting retorted that it did not matter as New Zealand and Tasmanian apples were the same. While Mr. Dee was arguing with the assistant the proprietor of the shop appeared and wanted to know what the trouble was. On being told the facts the proprietor admitted that Tasmanian apples were bein-g sold as New Zealand, added that this was the only way to get rid of them. It was then ascertained that the wrappers off New Zealand apples were saved and wrapped round the Tasmanian ones. Mr. Dee spoke- his mind freely to the shopman and later reported the matter to Mr. J. L. Brown, the chairman of the New Zealand fruit Control Board, who is also in England at. present.
