SCORE BOARD COMEDY
THE SHY FIGURE. “7
The comedy of the score board at Lord’s during the second cricket test whan Australia compiled; the recoidi score of 729 for six wickets, m reply to England’s 425. is described by the “Daily Telegraph’s” special correspondent. At (599 the score hesitated tor a lonrr while. Seven hundred is, it seems, a sSV number. At last it came, greeted with great cheering—and from somewhere in the crowd, the maniacal laughter of a jackass. Then. to the crowd’s delight, was enacted the comedy of the .score board on the south side of tlie ground. The numbers- flickered —and cauie to rest at 00; no 7 appeared. The score:;— apparently unaware of anything amiss —Jeant from his window, and the score declared 02. and then OG. 'Plio error was at length discovered. simultaneously with the fact that there was no 7 available. When at last a 7 was found, and raised amid cheers, it proved to be a very small one. Then followed a strange game of hide and seek, wherein the shy number would disappear within the box as often as the wind blow, until some inspiration suggested that it be well hound to its place—with string!
