DELHI, Sept, 10
Military experts have put forward a proposal for a large scale expedition to subdue and bring under permanent control the insurgent tribes on the north-west frontier, but financial difficulties stand in the way of the scheme. The opinion is expressed that the Afridi unrest has not subsided and army authorities argue that a concerted attempt to subdue the region once and for ail would prove less costly in the long run than continual vigilance and suppression of outbursts and would enable a reduction of the frontier forces to be made. Tlvo Viceroy’s .Executive Council invs carefully considered the matter, but the fact that the proposed movement would cost at least £23,0b0,C09 would appear in view of the present financial strm-o-enev to put it out of the question. frustrated attempt to organise a procession for the reception of Miss Madeline Slade, daughter ot ..Admiral Slade who is tin ardent disciple ot Gandhi led to rioting m the Indian ouartor of Calcutta last night. Three police officers were injured by stones flung by students from the university hostel. The police charged the crowds to clear the streets.
