PUBLIC LIBRARY

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Library Committee was held in the library last night. Those present were: Mesdatnes Syme and Reekes, Messrs Bjorngaard (chairman), Jackson, Cover, Bridget’, Drabble and the secretary (Mr L. Egarr). The librarian (Miss Cave) reported that 26 new books had been added to the lending department since last meeting. There were 109 members.

After a lengthy discussion on the arrangement of the shelves in the library it was decided to inspect all books on the shelves and remove only books that were worn or incomplete, this work to be undertaken by members of the committee.

It was also decided to erect a shelf to bold hooks returned each night, so as to obviate the congestion that occurs.

It was decided to order an additional copy of the “National Geographical AFagazine’’ for the lending department.

CRICKET CLUB

The annual meeting of the El 111 am Cricket Club was held last evening, the president (Mr J. J. Bridget-) presided over a good attendance. The annual report disclosed that the past season had been a. successful one, although some difficulty was experienced in securing full teams for the Saturday competition. Several new players were available for the coming season, and the prospects for securing a strong Thursday team were bright. The balance-sheet showed that the sum of £l3 13s 6d was received in metnbereship fees and donations, while the expenditure was £lO 6s 6d in excess of income. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. J.t was decided to enter one team onlv for the Thursday competition. The membership fee was fixed at £1 for senior players and 10s for junior placers (under 17 years of age). Messrs Burrell and Part-on were appointed delegates to the provincial centre conference.

The . importance of practice was stressed by several members, and it was decided to hold practices on Mondays. Wednesdays and Fridays at 5.15 in the evening and to commence on October 2.

Mr Burrell was appointed chairman of the committee.

A vote of thanks to the retiring secretary, Mr .T. Gower, and to the treasurer, Mr C. Burrell, was carried.

PLUNKET SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of the Eltliam 1 Junket Society was held in the rooms on Tuesday afternoon, when there wore present: Mesdames Carman (chair), Bridger, Pease, Belcher, Leo, Wylcls, Crawford, Cooper Saunclers Cover, Goldsmith,.
