FACTORY MANAGERS’ PAY
CONCILIATION DEADLOCK
TWO SEPARATE ASSOCIATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N , Aug. 26, . . Unusual circumstances were revealed when the Council of Conciliation met at Palmerston North to-day to consider an application by the Wellington— Dairy Factory Managers’ Industrial Union of Workers for an increase in wages and other improvements in the present working conditions. The Union of Workers was represented by Messrs C. Gough, J. A. Brooking and E. McBrierly, and Air. R. Fulton (New Plymouth) appeared as agent. The employer’s were represented by Messrs J. W. Rodden and P. J. Small.
The proceedings were taken in committee and at the conclusion the Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally, intimated that unusual circumstances had prevented anything being accomplished, From statements made it appears that two associations of managers _are in existence. Firstly there is a union of workers registered under the Act and which claimed' that the majority of the managers had been enrolled- as—members of that particular Ibrgamsa- -• tion. On the other hand there was a section of workers who had banded, themselves together, but who did not claim to have any registration. Never- ~ tlieless they too claimed the. 'major" portion of the managers within their fold. As the last mentioned organisation proposed to meet on Monday next to consider the: position the proceedings were adjourned in the liope that an amalgamation of the two sections would be brought about. Should that hope not.be fulfilled it will be necessary to refer the position .. to the Court of Arbitration for advice whether an award should be made or otherwise. Should the court _ determine in the affirmative the parties will he called together again . and an endeavour will be made to arrange mat- , ters as provided by the Arbitration Act.
