SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ PLAY. SOUTH ISLAND TOURNEY. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 25. The annual South Island secondary school Rugby tournament was commenced here to-day in brilliant sunshine and before a large attendance. In the first match Otago defeated Christchurch by 14 points to 3 after a rather disappointing display by both teams. The second match was highly exciting and spectacular, and Southland gained a meritorious victory over Timaru almost on the call of time, the final score being 7 —5 in the home team’s favour. , NELSON BEATS WELLINGTON

OHRirSTiOIIITRiOH, Aug. 25. .By beating Wellington College hv 11 points to. 5 to-day in the annual intercollegiate tournament, Nelson- College won the contest. Playing for the wooden spoon Christ’s College -and' Wanganui 'Collegiate School drew with M points each. Newt year the tournament will be played at AVanganui. In the AVellington-Nel-son game Wellington drew first blood, Sadder goingover and Carlson converting. Hooper then scored for Nelson, and half-time saw the position unchanged. Nelson drew to the front with a penalty goal by Newman, and just on time Buttress scored for Nelson and 1 Newman converted.

During the progress' of the game Nelson lost) two men: through injuries. Louisson l was replaced by Burge and Richards' by Powrie.

In the second game Christ’s College scored first, Rolles'ton getting over, but within a few minutes Innes equalised fur Wanganui. With another try by I lines, converted by. Glendining, Wanganui took the lead, which was reduced when AldCracken landed a penalty goal for 'Christ’s College. Kemp then scored) for the visitors, and MvCracken put- over another penalty for the local side, making the scores 11 ; —9 in Wanganui’s favour at the interval. 'Shortly after resuming ’Cotemian scored 1 for the visitors, and a few minutes later Kerr scored a, try for the home side, which Afc-Oracken converted, thus equalising the tallies.

The standard of play in both games was excellent, and the pace was a cracker throughout.
