DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND. ''United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright). LONDON, Aug. 28. The death is announced of the Duke of Northumberland. The eighth Duke of Northumberland succeeded his father in May, H>lß. Born in 1880, he married in 1011 Lady Helen Gordon Lennox, daughter of the Duke of Richmond, there being four "sons and two daughters of the marriage. Joining the Grenadier Guards, lie "rose to the position of lieutenantcolonel. He served in the South African war, in ties Sudan from 190> to 1010. and with the Egyptian Army during the Greet War, being mentioned in dispatches. He' was also an A.D.C. to Lord Grey n Canada in 1010. One of the largest coal-owners in the North of England, tne Duke of Northumberland was oallfd to give evidence before tUe San key Commission in 1010. and before :he public in a protracted controversy evith Mr. Robert Smillie, the leader >f the miners, and later bv his anti Communist campaign. He was also otnirman of directors of the “Morning Post,” chancellor of Durham University, and for more than a. decade was president of the Royal Colonial Institution He was made a member (fourth class) of the Royal Victorian Order in DIO, and with his wife received a CB.E. in the same’ year.
