LONDON, Aug. 5. “It is impossible for the Church Missionary Society to pay tlie ransom the Chinese bandits demand,” said Rev. V. Cash, secretary, referring to the| bandits cutting off the -fingers of Miss Nettleton. “If we began to pay up probably a hundred missionaries would be captured within a week.” A Foreign Office official says : “We already have made numerous appeals to the local authorities for troops to rescue Misses Nettleton and Harrison. Further urgent representations for swift action in ,securing their immediate release are being taken.”
