very brilliant, but, unfortunately for | his owner, developed a throat trouble I which threatened to end his career as a racehorse. Operated on, Supremacy has done well, and is now a commanding looking thoroughbred. It is stated that Supremacy will bo got ready for the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton in the spring. Very fast as a youngster, Coon Song subsequently lost form and did not again exhibit speed till the recent meeting at Trentham. There Coon Song went three good races, and as he is still eligible for the Oroua Plate, to be run at Awapjmi next Thursday, he appears to hold good prospects of still improving his winning record. } * * * * * After competing and falling in the Winter Hurdles on the third day of the late meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, Mister Gamp exhibited soreness. He has now shaken this off. and at present is working well. Ho is to compete in the Grand National Hurdle race at Riccarton, and although burdened with a substantial weight, he may prove dangerous in what can be described as a weak field. Idyn Dhu competed and won both hack hurdle events decided at the winter meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club. At Trentham lie was raced in flat events, and as Liya Dhu was nominated for both hurdle races and flat races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s coming meeting, ante-post bettors would naturally be in a. quandary as to which department the gelding would race in at Riccarton. Llyri Dhu is engaged in the hurdle race at the coming meeting at Awapuni, so it is reason-j able to assume that he will be a runner in the coming Grand National Hurdle race. * *

In goi-n-g south to last iSa turd ay’s Hunt flub meeting at Timaru, H. 'Gray made" it .clear that he was desirous of heading tiro list in the vvininiing rides ’. competition of our jockeys. vr -/• * * * .•The iManUwatu Waring Club received excellent acceptances for tlieiir (winter meeting, anti if the weather is good the (dub may do better than they themselves expect. .Some note's ou the meeting will appear in to-morrow’s issue, of this, paper. In addition to riding id at u in' tiro Grand National Steeplechase, li. Symc will be on King’s Jest in the Grand National Hurdles. 'Sym'd rode this gelding to victory in the last Grent Northern Hurdles, but A. E. Ellis was substituted! for S'yme on King’s Jest in the Winter Hurdle's at Trent.hani' .recently. Make Up ran two splendid’ raeels at the recent meeting of the ,Wellington) It.icing Club, and seeing these were Ills maiden efforts as w hurdler, it sugges't- . ed a promising career for Make Up as | a jumper. This Blenheim-ciwned ge.ld- ! ing is to .compete at the. Cniltefbuny Jo'c.ke’y .Club’s eoiinling meriting, and assuming that lie lias gone on the right way. Make Up should! certainly pay expense's on the trip. At Trenthaini' Make Up wnS riddem by R. Symc, who, however, did not ride him quite up to Ins usual good) standard, but as Synve will, again ride the gelding at R.ieearton. they may work more in harmony. tr *• * ir Like the! mojnrity -of steeplechase courses ini this Dominion, that of the Mnuawntn Rating Club is somrr.vh.Tt light, but it will serve as a good dross rehearsal for Grand! National candidates. Tiv addition) to Wharuellffo, Trainer T. IT. Gilleit haw another Grand National .Steeplechase .candidate in Lord Ranald under his care. 'Thais far, Lord Ranald Iras, not beaten anything very good, but he haw got through some excellent work recently, and he may prove n likely one for the Grand- National .Steeplechase.

Up to the present nothing authentic lias been made public as to 11. Gray’s mount in the coming Winter 'Cup. It is stated on reliable authority that the Taranaki horseman! will be up on Best Friend in the big mile event at Riecarton. Gray rode Best Friend when' that gelding won -a' double at the last meeting at Hastings, and he was also on him when he beat a. big i field ini the Why re Handicap (one mile) at the recent meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. On that scicca.sion Best Friend only just beat High Pitch, but Gray stated! after the race that had he been able to use his whip Bes't Friend would have won by a much greater margin. On 'the Whyte Handicap performance Best Friend must be dangerous in the Winter 'Gup, as the fact must not be overlooked that he is only a three-yea T-old and has made much improvement with recent, racing.
