LORRY FALLS INTO RIVER
MAN. PINNED AND DROWNED. COMPANIONS SEVERELY INJURED, (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIPUKUR.AU, May 16. An accident occurred late this afternoon on Makarefcu Road, three miles south of Ongaaonga, where by Frederick William Spotswood, aged 20, lost ,s life.
Thme men employed as a line party by the Post and Telegraph Department at Waipukurau were proceeding along the road, and when they were negotiLing the bridge over tlie Tukituk; Rliver the stealing gear apparently failed..- precipitating their motor-lorry through the structure into the river, a. distance of 12ft. The lorry pinned Spotswood by the body, and. he was apparently drowned. The body was recovered.
The other occupants of the lorry, Claud Page, (44, married), and Robert Stabler (20, singls), residents of Waipukuran, were injured, Page suffering a lacerated head, bruises and shock, and necessitating istitoh.es. They were admitted ±o the Waipukurau Hospital.
Both men struggled from the upturned vehicle into the river and made heroic efforts to lift the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Page, although suffering severely, walked some chains to a. settlor's residence and advised the police and doctor and the postal officials.
The mother of Spotwood previously lost- one son in a., motor accident, her husband died, and now her second son is killed within 18 months.
