HAWERA SHOPKEEPERS

• SPORTS NIGHT REQUEST. CONSIDERED BY COMMITTEE. The question of the visit of the British Farmers’ touring party, and thenspending a night in Hawera, was discussed at the usual monthly meeting of the executive of the Hawera Retailers’ Association on Thursday evening. From the information available amongst members it was gathered that the Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce have arranged for a suitable entertainment for the evening.;

A letter was received from the Hawera Athletic Club requesting that shopkeepers should he asked to close at S p.m. on Saturday, March 1, to give the public the opportunity of witnessing the finals of the events at the Wanganui-Taranaki championship meeting to be held in Hawera. A further meeting to consider the matter is to be held next week, when a canvass, which has already been begun, is completed. A. discussion took place with regard to complaints by members of the association that nuisances were caused in doorways of shops, particularly on Sunday nights, and it was resolved that the attention of the police be called to the matter. The matter of the holidays to be observed by banks at Easter time was brought up as the result of a letter received from a member of the association. The chairman reported an interview with the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, by whom he was informed that the matter had not yet been decided bv the authorities, but it was possible that Easter Tuesday would not be observed as a bank holiday this year.
