MANAIA.
(Fiom Our Own Correspondent.) SHOW ARRANGEMENTS. A meeting of the Waimate Horticultural Show committee was held last evening to finalise arrangements for the forthcoming show, which promises to he an outstanding success. Mr. T. A. Bridge presided. No detail for the successful management of the function has been overlooked and the secretary will be pleased to receive entries as early as possible. A working bee is to be held at the showgrounds on Monday next at 7 p.m., and a full attendance is requested. SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
An increase in the secondary department of the school, with a slight decrease in the primary, was reported by the headmaster (Mr. J. Nairn) to the Manaia School Committee on Wednesday evening, at the monthly meeting. Mr. A. F. Gamlin, chairman, presided and there was a full attendance of members.
The report further stated that Miss McLeod had been permanently appointed assistant in the secondary department, Air. AY. A. AlcKenzie assistant, and Mr. T. Bailey and Alisses A. Dudley and Jean Allen probationers. The roll of the primary school showed 245 names, with an average attendance of 210, and the secondary roll number was 46, the average attendance being 41.2. It was stated that further reports; on recent examinations showed that of the two candidates for Civil Service entrance one had been successful, and the total results were highly satisfactory. The chairman expressed the thanks of the committee and parents to all those who voluntarily donated cash and goods for the entertainment of the children at the recent picnic. The headmaster reported that special interest was shown in woodwork classes, the attendance, including pupils from Okaiawa and Kapuni. The chairman reported that shelter sheds for waiting pupils at Glenn Road and Inaha. were well on the way towards completion. It was resolved to dispense with the services of the grounds caretaker until funds should permit a change. It was decided to hold a gala at Ivaupokonui beach on AYednesday, February 26, the ladies’ committee to meet on Monday, February 17. Cordial acknowledgment was made of Air. and Airs. Gamlin’s interest in the children’s welfare on the day of the picnic. Hie committee passed a vote of thanks to Alns. Dick, for filling a gap for nine weeks at the close of last year as instructress in dressmaking.
