UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE
ALLOWANCES TO WIVES. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, Dec. 4. The Minister of Labour (Muss Margaret Bomdfield) informed the House of Commons that the committee on the Unemployed Insurance Bill regretted that it could not accept an 'amendment to pay the wives of unemployed 10s instead of 9s a week. I't would cost £825,000. Mr Wheatley said he believed Miss Bondfield was personally opposed to 'the amendment. She would regret the day when she entered public fife. Miss Bondfield moved the closure, whlieh was carried by 293 votes to 168. The amendment was defeated by 229 votes to 28. M.r Baldwin and 50 Conservatives and 20 Liberals did not vote. Miss Jennie Leo .moved to increase the allowances to -the children of un employed from 2s to ss, which would dost £4,500,000 and affect 600,000 children. This was defeated by 210 votes to 37, many Liberals and Conservatives and dozens of Labour members abstaining from the division.
