ELEVEN DROWNED
NORWICH CITY DISASTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Dee 4. Eleven of the crew of the steamer Norwich City were drowned when the vessel was wrecked on Gardner Island, in the Phoenix Group, according to a wireless message received by the secretary of the General Post Office tonight. The steamers Trongate and Lincoln Ellsworth, in response to SOS calls, rushed to Gardner Island,. 600 miles north of Samoa, reaching the scene of the wreck at seven o’clock this morning. The Trongate reported to-night that it had rescued three of the crew, and that 21 remained on the island. Tire 11 drowned when the vessel struck included six Arab firemen. Very heavy seas were running, stated the Trongate’s message, but the utmost endeavours were being made to rescue the remainder of the crew.
