HAWERA POULTRY SOCIETY.

ANNUAL SOICIAfL

PRIZES PRESENTED

Alembers of the Hawera Poultry Society and their friends gathered at the annual social on Wednesday in the Scouts’ Hall, (Mr E. ,AI. Galvin, president, being in the chair. The loyal toast having been proposed, “The Society” was given by Mr P. Trim, who said he considered it one of the most useful and important in the province and that it had done much to raise , the standard of poultry. The efforts of members and exhibitors in other parts had resulted in the annual exhibition at winter show time being one of the best, while local exhibitors had done well at other shows. Air Trim made special reference to the egg laying competitions instituted and lie eulogised the work of Mr Don Stewart, who had, he said, proved the backbone of the society and responsible for a lot of its success.

In his reply, the chairman said lie agreed that the society was doing good work though the executive had had to watch its operations very carefully. He commented favourably on the YoungBird Show and referred to the great, help given by the Government experts, one of whom, Mr G. Docker, had given a valuable lecture to members.

Mr Don Stewart also spoke, recalling his close association for thirty years with the industry, and congratulating members on their good work which had resulted in the society making such great progress. He added that it would be an education to any (breeder to inspect the work 'being done at the competition in Normanby. He said that the birds were of the highest standard and the arrangements efficient, in every way.

Mr J. B. Wilson said that the society owed a debt of gratitude to the honorary secretary (Mr A. Hopkins) who had given of his best in its interests. “The Donors of Trophies’’ was proposed by Mr W. M.oore, who said that whereas a few years ago the society had but two cups, it now had trophies valued at £llO. This was due mainly to the business people and residents of the town and district. Replying, Mr A. E. Gardener said he considered it a pleasure to give a trophy to such an enterprising body and that ho felt sure all donors were amply repaid ibv the appreciation of winners.

Speaking .of the society, the honorary secretary said that trophies valued at £l3 had been ivon outright last year and it would appear the society would need to rely once more on the business people. The members’ subscriptions were small and he considered that the fees for the Young Bird Show would need to be increased. The society had ended the year with a credit of £2O and the executive should endeavour to make even better terms than before with the winter show executive. Other toasts honoured w r ere: Presidents and Past Presidents (Mr G. Gaylord—Mr C. Cudby); Winners (Mr €. Cudfby—Messrs D. Stewart and W. H. Barker); Artists and Visitors (Mr D. Stewart—Messrs A. E.
