A PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. When William Thomas Youlden walked out of the Mount Eden prison this morning after serving a three months’ sentence for the unlawful conversion of a motor-ear he was met by a detective who arrested him. Later Youlden appealed in the Police Court on the following charge: On May 21, 1929, being a person the date of whose arrival was earlier than two years after the termination of imprisonment suffered by him in respect of an offence 'which, if committed in New Zealand, would bo punishable by imprisonment for two years or upwards, not being a mere political offenec and no pardon having been granted, did land in New Zealand.’’

The Collector of 'Customs, who 1 prosecuted, said Youlden. on August 7, 1928, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment at Adelaide, South Australia, for attempted larceny from tlie person. He came to New Zealand on May 21 last under the name of Thomas, and shortly afterwards unlawfully converted a motor-car which earned him a sentence of three months’ imprisonment. Because of his arrival here in sMay he came within the Immigration Restriction Act and was therefore a prohibited immigrant.

The collector asked for an order to deport Youdcn to Australia. “I know the police will object to' it, but could I have bail?” asked Youden. He told tlie magstrate he intended going to Australia on his own accord and asked if lie could have his liberty until the boat sailed.

The magistrate (Mr F. Iv. Hunt): You have a vert’ bad list. I think you will be safer inside until the boat sails. Bail was refused.

THEFT OF RABBIT 'SKINS,

BLENHEIM, Sept. 4,

Alexander 'Colin Busehle was to-day convicted of the theft of 400 rabbit skins, the property of 'Clarence 'Claude Haines, and was admitted to probation for two years, ordered to make restitution at the rate of £4 a month, and pay the costs of the prosecution. FAILED TO MAKE 'RETURNS OF LAND. BLENHEIM, .Sept. 4. For failure to make returns of land, George Eaton 'was fined £2 and costs in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, and T. Pike, on a similar charge, was also | fined £2 and costs.

Both defendants had paid each year the tax assessed by the department.

CHARGE AGAINST TAXI-DRIVER

INVERCARGILL, Sept. 4.

In the Police Court this .morning, Thomas Harold Brewer, a taxi-driver, was charged with keeping a common gaining house and with carrying on business as a bookmaker. Accused pleaded not guilty to- both charges and on the second elected to be dealt with by a jury. After 'hearing the evidence for the prosecution, the magistrate said lie was satisfied a priina facie case had been made out, and on the chat-ge of bookmaking he committed Brewer for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. The charge of keeping a- common gaming house was adjourned till after the next, sitting of the Supreme Court.

FAILURE TO ACCOUNT ADMITTED. BLENHEIM, Sept. 4. Ernie rick Harold Warren was charged in the Magistrate's Court today that at Waipiata on February 17, 1927, he received £l2 18s 6d on terms requiring him to account, for it to Whit© and Co. and that he fraudulently failed to do so, thereby committing theft. Accused pleaded guilty, ami in evidence said he bought a. suit from a traveller and allowed him to take out the price in a tyre* and petrol, accused at tliO' time being the manager for White and Co. Tie also took an old I'Ord cylinder from a. scrap heap and sold it.

Warren was admitted to probation for two rears, and was ordered to refund £l2 18s fkl and 1 pav the costs.
