Mr .T. T. Quin, of Wanganui, an exrcsidenfc of Eltham, is staying with his daughter, Mrs St. Leger Reeves. Mr A. G. Hardy has resigned his position as secretary-harbourmaster to the Opunakc Harbour Board to toko up a position at Lyttelton, and he will leave Opunakc at the end of the month. An Australian Press Association message from Melbourne states that Canon Frederick Waldegrave Read, of Liverpool. England, has (been invited to accept the Archbishopric of Melbourne which has been vacant since the death of Dr. Lees on January 10. Word lias been received by Miss Jean Lander, of Mokoia, that she has been successful in obtaining a pass in the art of teaching and the rudiments of the Trinity College. Ais she has already passed the practical part of the examination she is now an associate. Miss Lander is a pupil of Mrs H. Morrieson. The “Marlborough Express” records the death, at the age of 67 years, of Mr David Paterson, a well-known and respected resident of Ivoromiko. He was a brother of Messrs J. and W. P. Paterson. of Pa,tea.
Mrs Ellen Birkett, aged 98 years, the oldest identity of the Opunakc district, died at Wellington last week. The internment took place at the Opunakc cemetery cm Monday, the Rev. T. Coatsworth officiating. For many years the late Mrs Birkett lived with her husband and family on their farm on the Eltham Road.
Prior to the commencement of the social evening of the Hawera Scottish Society last night, Chieftain J. E. Campbell referred to the death of Mrs Thomson, of Hawera, and Mr Robert Lambic, of Piliama, both old and valued members of the society. Mr Lain bio, said Mr Campbell, had been a foundation member, and had always taken a keen interest in the work of the isocietv.
