MIGRATION SCHEME

LATE EDITION

FRIENDLY HELP. COMMITTEES PROPOSED. ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS. fnmued Pr<es«- •.■*><►oahnu- p.. ki**hni i~|. * .»'*&. [ 3 * • T A HASTINGS, Aug. 31. Interviewed on his return from England, Rear-Admiral Lawson (Havelock Nor till) had many interesting things to say regarding his endeavours to formulate. a system whereby suitable family immigrants might be attracted to the Dominion. His main contentions are that besides bringing out- settlers pre"a. -ed to earn their living and willing, by reason, of economic necessary, to try any experi ment, there is room ior many heads of families with small fixed incomes to whom New Zealand would appeal as. a place to educate and settle their children. Rear-Admiral Lawson consider,s that representative committees of men and women should be formed to supply information, meet the newcomers and help, not financially, on their arrival. When in London he interviewed Mr Bevin, Secretary of the Overseas Settlement Committee, who commended! the idea, it having had some success in Canada. Rear-Admiral Lawson said that assisted passages were not contemplated, nor overlapping with other organisations. The Overseas League at Home would put the committees in touch with suitable families, who would he met on arrival and advised on bousing. schools, openings for children, etc. The whole idea was to link the Dominion more closely -with the Mother Country and that the scheme should he based on friendly, not financial help. It was intended to set up a committee in Hastings and the Mayor, Mr Roa.dh, gives cordial approval and' is willing to act as chairman.
