The Holy Land is shocked to its foundations by the outrages by Arabs against the Jews, says a special correspondent of the “Daily Express’ ’ at Jerusalem. Business is at a standstill, shops are closed, telephones are not working and the Press is censored. It is officially admitted that 80 to 100 have been killed l and the> hospitals are filled with the wounded.

The bloodiest tragedy occurred at Hebron, where 73 Jews were slaughtered) in their homes. Twelve of them were American students qualifying for the Fahbinate. They wore eating the Sabbath meal when a mob of .armed tribesmen -descended' on the village. Men, women and children were cut to pieces, IS in a. single -home, including Mr Slonim, manager of the AngloPalestine Bank, his wife, two children, and his parents-in-law.

A Nana correspondent .states the reason why the massacre at Hebron was not completed was because the Arabs desired to make sure they had killed those' whom they attacked. They were not content with cutting off the ears and noses and mutilating the bodies of their victims, but stopped to pillage every house. Consequently many Jewish houses escaped entirely. At least 25 Americans were among those attacked. Survivors declare 15 boys were killed and some of them horribly mutilated. The Valley of Jezreel is 28 miles south-east of the seaport of Acre. Beisan is on the railway from Acre to Damascus. Nablus, the Sheehem of the Old Testament, is 30 miles north of Jerusalem. Sporadic outbreaks continue- over a. wide area. Jews in Jerusalem are afraid to aonear in the open and hundreds are hiding for fear of their lives. Hotels and public institutions are packed with refugees, and harrowing stories are toid of the murder of relatives in the foulest circumstances. Whole villages have been pillaged and the contents of the dwellings dumped and burned. A poignant story was told by a 13-year-old Jewish girl who was seized by a hand of frenzied Arabs, hut was recovered after a desperate struggle by her father. No -sooner was ghe released than she was compelled to see -her father stabbed to death. A grim aftermath of the rioting was the carrying of the Jewish _ and Arab dead to secret places of burial. Jerusalem to-night is indeed -a -city of the dead. The policing of Jerusalem is now m the hands of a volunteer force of 600 British citizens, who are patrolling the streets dav and night. All persons are required to -be. in their homes n the curfew at six in the evening. The situation with the appearance of British khaki and British bayonets, however, became easier. A crowd of Moslems sudden!v attacked* the Government offices at Jaffa, whereupon British police fired, repelling the attack. Five Arabs were killed and more than 30 wounded.

Ten thousand Jews assembled in Eastside and heard addresses by their leaders ; then marched to the City Hall and the British Consulate to protest against the Palestine situation. At the Consulate cantors chanted a funeral dirge and sang the Jewish. Anthem. At the City Hall the Mayor, Mr Walker, assured the Jews that he believed “persecution never accomplished anything.” He would do- all ho could to aid them. Sir Harry Armstrong said he did not agree with the thesis of their formal protest, hut would advise London of their wishes. The Jews carried a placard accusing Britain of failing to maintain it-s protectorate sufficiently. The Zionist organisation met tonight to plan further protests. The latest news from Hebron tells of a frrnesome mass-acre of eighty Jews and the wounding of forty, incjuidling theological students and children.

Seven Jews were mutilated and burned to death at Alotza. It lias been confirmed that Air H. Sykes, superintendent qf the Palestine railway, was fatallly wounded in. the rioting on Sunday. It is reported also tliat a British journalist 'has been killed. The Government has closed the Eastern frontier in order to prevent Trans-Jordan Arabs from advancing on Palestine. The Egyptian Consul was stoned while motoring outside Jerusalem.
