IX WESTERN JUNIOR PLAY-OFF. o la a game that, was spiritedly contested every inch of the way, Okaiawa defeated Waimate at Kaponga yesterday afternoon in the play-off to decide the winners of the western junior division. Play -was well up to junior standard, and the interest of a couple of hundred spectators was, at times, keyed up to a high pitch of enthusiasm. Okaiawa, on the day’s play, were the better team, and the final score —13 —6 in their favour- was a fair indication of the run of the game. The teams were as fblloAv: — Waimate (blue and black). —'Bloomfield; W. Edwards, Mold, Pa rata; King, Skinny; G. Edwards; W. Tamu (rover); Hansen, Ainsley; Pei, E. Edwards. T. Tamu; iHaka, Tucker (hookers). _

Okaiawa (rod and (black). —{Blair; Clarke, Ngaia, Hooper; Murdoch, .James; Skipper; Tito (rover); Watson, Poole; Wilkinson, Rakei, Barclay; Bailey, Xuku (hookers). From the kick-off Okaiawa worked their way into Waimate territory and after a couple of ineffectual attempts to open up passing bouts were pushed back to their own side of the half-way line. Play veered between the twenty. I fives for some time, the blue forwards then getting to within five yards of Okaiawa’s goal-line. A free kick to [ the defenders enabled them to clear to mid-field, but Waimate came again, and a penalty against the reds saw ißoi ! pilot the ball between the uprights. I Waimate .3—Okaiawa 0. i With the ball in play again, Okai- [ awn’s vanguard -carried the leather to | the blues’ goal-line, but were just as quickly pushed back to nearby territory. From about 40 yards out Xgaia attempted to turn a penalty to account for Okaiawa, but, a good kick fell short. Skipper had a shot a minute later from a. difficult angle and also failed. ‘Clarke was also unable to turn a further penalty 1o account. Uneventful play followed, being mostly confined to the forwards. Then Okaiawa got Waimate bustled, and tin the twinkling of an eve were over the goal-line, but. the blue’s obtained possession and forced. The reds immediately went back on the attack, and Murdoch, obtaining possession, transferred to ‘Clarke, and, accepting a reverse pass, the first-named went over at the corner.'Skipper added the major! points. Okaiawa s—Waimate 3. Half-time sounded a minute or two later. Waimate were early on the aggressive in the second spell, ibut a free kick sent, them back and play remained in mid-field for some time. Okaiawa got into the blues’ twenty-five, and with the defenders penalised, Skipper landed a good goal. Okaiawa S—Waimate 3. Okaiawa backs then started to throw t!ie 'ball round, and in one passing bout Clarke, the final receiver, was pulled down, in the twenty-five. Another rush a minute later saw Hooper evade a couple of men to cross and touch down under the posts. Murdoch had no difficulty in converting. Okaiawa 13, Waimate 3.

Waimate put a little more ginger into their play and had Okaiawa on the defence for five minutes. King

cut in nicely in a passing bout, but hung on too long ami was pulled down ten yards from the goal-line. From a mark Parata attempted to drop-kick a goal, the ball just going outside the far post. Play went back to mid-lield, and then Waimate attacked again, the reds having to force. A penalty‘kick to tlie blues failed to alter the scores, while another a couple of minutes later was also unproductive. After a period of even play Waimate made a lightning attack, and following a brief scramble; on the line Skinny dived over. The kick nvns disallowed. Time sounded a few minutes later, with the final scores:

Okaiawa 13, Waimate 0. Mr C. 11. Bowman was the referee.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. FEILDING BEAT HAWEKA. ANNUAL MATCH PLAYED. Them was an interested crowd of spectators at, the, annual Rugby football match between Feilding and Haworst High Schools, which Was played at Hawera yesterday. Though. ,t‘he local boys tiid a lot of good work aad put up a much better fight than the scores would indicate, Feilding proved superior and won by a large margin of points. Hawera were on Feilding’s line for a considerable time ait various points of the match, but could not cross. The teams were:—

FeiMing—Waugh; Fitzpatrick, Prebble, Underwood; Wild, Bramwell; Hoffmetister; Truss (rover), Crump, Fade, Newlands, Brook, Gavin, Guthrie and Hunter.

. Hawera—Surgenor; Herbert, Boyle, Lee; R-. Campbell, Cooley; M. Campbell; Gray (rover); Keegan, Lewis, Kippenberger, Pacey, Woollett, Lord, Huston. Feilding kicked off and play was even ’ for several minutes till, for offside play, ' Hawera had a shot and Keegan just failed :to- convert and Feilding forced. Faulty play by Hawera backs gave Feilding an opening and their fiveeighths gut army and Wyld, Bramwell and Underwood put in a nice passing rush, and in a good position Trass marked. His kick was just wide of the posts and Hawem had to force. Their forwards forced their way up-field and for sonic time were hammering at the line. Herbert made a nice dash, but was not supported and a good chance was lost. Lee and Cooley were together in a passing rush, but faulty handling lost the advantage, and Feilding attacked. Once more Hawera, aided by clever kicking by Surgenor, attacked, and Pacey headed a hot assault on the opposing line. For offside play Hawera i were given a free kick and Keegan’s I kick avas just outside the posts. M. Campbell broke through from a scrum and play went close to Feilding’& goal. The visitors worked to centre and then Herbert raised the hopes of the local supporters by running clean through the opposing team, but a faulty pass lost all the advantage. Feilding then got aw r ay in a lose rush and, the ball coming out, Underwood brilliantly ran to the quarter-way, where Trass tried to pot. Surgenor marked and his kick went out at the twenty-five flag. The visiting backs set up a nice passing rush and the ball coming out to Fitzpatrick the latter dashed over near the corner. The kick failed.

Feilding 3 —Hawera 0. Hawera went up-field from the kickout and gave their opponents a busy time defending. They stood the test and then the forwards got away and went tOi the centre, where Wyld secured and got clean away past the full-back. His pace was hardly sufficient and Lee caught him just short of the line. A free kick gave relief and Keegan headed a battering forward rush that took play to the half-way. There it remained for several minutes, but Feilding forwards got away once more and the; ball coming out from a scrum Hoff-: meister got. his backs in action and the ball went to Underwood, who finished a capital dash by grounding the leather over the. line. The' kick failed. Feilding G—Hawera 0. Once more the visitors attacked and again their backs swung into action, Fitzpatrick coming across 1 and in ia good position handing .to Wyld. He was collared: and. Hawera repelled the attack. The relief was only temporary, for in a line rush Underwood got clean away and ran round behind the posts. The kick again failed. Feilding 11 —Hawera 0.

The second spell opened with a. vigorous attack by the Hawera forwards tha t ended just short of the line. Feilding relieved and two useful dashes by Fitzpatrick put- the visitors in a strong position. The speedy three-quarter got away once more and was taken by Surgenor when ten yards short of the line. Wyld secured from a loose rush and was: collared close to the posts. Again the ball came out and going .to the threequarters Underwood beat the opposition and again scored. The kick was unsuccessful. Feilding 12 —Hawera-. 0. Immediately after the kick-out, Feildi.ng backs (attacked and carried play to •the line and Hawera forced. The incident was .repeated a. few- minutes later and then from a loose rush the ball came -out to Fitzpatrick, who ran in almost unopposed. Trass converted with a beautiful kick. Feilding 17—Hawem 0. A minute later Trass broke away and I dashed across. He goaled again. ' j Feilding 22—Hawem 0. j

The locail iboys attacked from the kick-out. but back came the Feilding forvr rds in a dashing attack and only

clever defence by Cooley and Surgenor averted a further score. Pac-ey and Keegan headed a loose rush that took play to the opposing twenty-five. Back once more came the visitors and in a fine passing rush Fitzpatrick was forced out just on the corner flag. Keegan, Pacey and Woollett led a relieving rush and a kick by B. Campbell went out at half-way. Fitzpatrick got away with a useful dash, but was well collared, and a Hawem forward rush kept the visitors defending. The (ball came out to the backs and Lee was .pushed out near the quarter-way. The forwards carried, on and in a vigorous loose rush play went out at the corner flag. Feilding cleared and wild passing by the Hawera backs spoiled several capital openings. Then the Feilding backs swung into line and the ball went across to Fitzpatrick, who w T as well taken at the twenty-five flag. Just afterwards Prebble took near the quarter-way and ran clean through to score near the posts. The kick failed. Feilding 25—Hawera 0. Hawera still battled on against odds. The visitors’ attacking backs were, however, too good and they had an almost clear run in when a forward pass spoiled .the opening find a scrum was given. Hawera a few- minutes later put in a last dash and with play near the centre the ball went out and time was called, leaving .the scores— Feilding 25—Hawera 0. Mr K. McNde was referee.
