JUNIOR CHAMPIONS BEATEN. CITY LOSES TO INGLEWOOD. . * (Special To The Star.) i INGLEWOOD. Aug. 15. I A semi-final game of the first junior competition for the Taranaki ehani- ( pionsliip between City (last year’s 1 provincial champions) and Inglewood was played at'lnglewood yesterday and resulted" in a win for the home team (by 16 points (3 tries, two .converted and a genalty goal) to 6 (a try and a penalty). The ground was in perfect order and the spectators were treated to a thrilling exhibition of bright football. I The score is no indication of the game ' and the issue was in doubt until near I the end, when Inglewood added two ' tries in quick succession. City had all the .better of .the first spell ’and Hart kicked a penalty goal. Just before half-time Inglewood topic the lead again with a try by Goodwin, converted by Allen. Inglewood set up a hot attack in the second spell, but City broke away and Cairneross scored near the posts, but the goal was missed. Cork ill (Inglewood) goaled from a pen. . alty shortly after and Devereux (Inglewood)', who was prominent, in the forwards, added two tries, the last being converted by Allen. Inglewood won the toss and City kicked off,immediately setting up a hot attack which -persisted for threequarters of the spell. Corkill marked from the line-out and relieved with a useful kick. City came back, only to. be returned by Trass to half-way. Morrissey got possession, but was smothered by O’Brien. The former took a g'ood mark from . Mcßoberts. City were still on the attack and Morrissey cut in and kicked, Trass being obliged to find touch in the 'corner. Several scrums took place on the line until a free-kick brought relief to the maroons, iCorkill lining near half-way. Macbeth and Barron led a stirring dash to the line and from the ensuing serum Kendall whipped the ball t'o ‘Cairncross, who made a determined bid to cross, but was tackled, as was Morrissey, who accepted his pass. The 'City hookers were lifting their feet in the scrum, and a penalty brought much-needed relief to the home team. The City forwards were going great guns and a strong dash was w6ll stopped by Allen. Noung was knocked out but resumed. City kept up the -pressure, but -could not score and a temporary breakaway took play to City ’s territory for Hie first time. Arnold cut through, but Raynor saved and then Deveroux spoiled ft gooil chance to equalise immediately when they wore awarded*a penalty, but Deveroux’s kick was low. City kicked to the blind side from the drop-out, but Mcßoberts evaded several men and cleared but Ritter marked. Raynor was penalised far layingon the ball and was knocked out as well, but was able to resume. After hard forward work in Inglewood’s territory an irresistablc forward rush took the ball to the City line, where Goodwin scored and Allen converted.

Inglewood s—City 3. Inglewood kept up the attack, first Arnold and then Trass’ nearly being over. Play was .suspended while Corkill received attention and half-time came with -the scores unaltered. Inglewood started off as City had done in the first, spell. The best combined movement of the day was started Ibv Glenn and went through the line to Trass whose reverse pass was forward. Mcßoberts was nearly over. Rayner retired and was replaced ,bv Brown, who immediately made a good run. Immediately after the City forwards broke through and took play to thg line, where Cairncross scored in" -the

same place as Inglewood had gone over. The kick failed. City 6 —lnglewood 5. Inglewood pressed again, but Alien imilied when he had a good chance ajui City relieved. Pope returned, however. and several scrums took place on tiie 'City line. Kendall cleared temporarily* but his forwards infringed and Corkill kicked a good goal. Inglewood B—-City 6. Inglewood were now in the ascendant and were throwing the ball about. Allen kicked high and followed up, Unit was beaten by the bounce when the way was clear. Hart endeavoured to clear by running behind his own line, but was epught by Cowley and Devereux, who had followed up, fell on the ball. Alien missed .the goal. Inglewood 11 —-City .6. Stung by the reverse City attacked, a force-down ensuing. City attacked .again, but Hope checked them with a splendid mark with 'his finger-tips. In going for the .ball, Hart and Kendall collided and Devereux ran from the twenty-five line to score unopposed. Allen converted. Inglewood 16—-City ,6. Kendall was rather seriously hurt and was carried off. The end came shortly after with play in neutral territory and tlve score unchanged. Mr L. Goodacre refereed.
