TRADE DEPRESSION

IN AUSTRALIAN CITIES. UNEMPLOYMENT RIFE. REPORTS OP PEOPLE STARVING. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph I Copyright.) (.Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Aug. .14. The trade depression resultant in unemployment is causing serious concern in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Reports are coming in daily of men,, women and children starving. A Salvation Army officer at Bathurst has warned the authorities that suffering among a percentage of the lower classes is so acute that there is a grave danger of some men causing food riots if relief is not forthcoming for their fa mi-lies. A deputation of Trades Hall officials at Melbourne to-day interviewed the Premier, Sir William McPherson, on this subject and frankly told him that unless there was some change in the 1 unemployed outlook very soon there would be trouble whether itho Premier liked it or not. One delegate stated it was only logical to assume that mien would not starve all the time while there existed others who had plenty. The Premier promised to consult the manufacturers ’ and builders’ organisa- , lions, but warned the deputation he would not tolerate strikes', which, ho contended, were in lai large measure re , sponsible for the present deplorable eco- ' nomic and industrial conditions.
