THEFT OF CHEESE. At the Eitham Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. R. AY. Tate, S.M., \\ ilfred Leslie Sattier, labourer or Kaponga, pleaded .guilty to theft of cheei.se, valued at £-3 lOs .from the Malioe factory on July 6. Outlining the facts of the ease, Sergeant Henry said that the defendant, with a companion who did not figure in the proceedings, visited the factory at 9 p.m. on his way home from Stratford. The cheese had not been recovered. On behalf of accused, Air. Hesseli made a strong plea for leniency and the imposition of a fine on the grounds that he had a wife and family dependent upon him. The accused, he said, was a hard working man and on the occasion of the theft had been more or less under the inliuence of liquor. In view of the offender’s past record the magistrate said he was disinclined to indict a line. He would be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour and ordered to make restitution of the value of the stolen cheese, in instalments. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. On the information of Constable O’jjonoghue, Ronald M. Shepherd, a tiawere motor mechanic, appeared to answer a charge or being illegally on the premises or the Rominiou Hotel. Kaponga, on August 1, at a time when sucii were required by law to be dosed . Sergeant Henry stated that the accused was seen by the constable to . enter the back entrance of the hotel and • was followed by the latter who found the intruder at the door of the porter’s room. A conviction and line of £2, with l(Js costs, was entered. Frederick Albert Matthews, a plumber, employed at Kaponga, was also charged with unlawfully entering the same hotel on the same date, and further, with falsely representing himself as a lodger when questioned by Constable O’Ronoghue. On behalf or accused, who did not appear, it was admitted that lie had previously lodged at the hotel, but on the date in question was boarding privately. A conviction, fine of £2, and 10s costs were imposed in respect of the first charge, and on the second the accused was convicted and discharged. Mr. A Chrystal, wlio appeared for both offenders, made an unsuccessful application for suppression of Matthews’ name.

ERRING MOTORISTS. Charged with exceeding the speed limit and driving a motor car through Eitham in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public, Edward Sampson, stock agent, was' convicted and lined 20s with 10s costs. Similarly charged, Selwyn Cooper, also a stock agent, who did not appear, was fined 30s with 10s costs. Mr. St. L. Reeves, who appeared for the Eltliam borough Council, stated that the defendant had been previously warned against driving at an excessive speed. Refendant’s excuse for his latest lapse wars that he was hurrying to fill an engagement at Hawera. In imposing the fine the magistrate remarked that the defendant was in danger of losing his driver’s license. For driving motor vehicles not equipped with periscopes or red reflectors, Thomas Thompson, Frederick E. Bai.ev, William O. J. Mum-by and Clarence Ennis were each lined 10s, with los 3d costs, the magistrate saying lie was taking a lenient view of the charges in consideration of the fact that they were first offences. For cutting the corner of Bridge and High Streets while riding a motor cycle oil July 20, Fred Taylor was convicted and lined 40s and 10s costs. Arthur AY Spargo and At. B. Doolaghty, on charges of being unlicensed drivers of motor vehicles, were each fined los and los 3d costs. Fred Spalding and George T. Austin, on [similar charges, but under mitigating circumstances, were each subjected to fines of 10s, with costs los 3d. Francis Iro Take, charged with driving a motor vehicle without a tail light on July 8, was convicted and fined 10s, with los 3d costs.
