OBITUARY.

MR. ALFRED WEBBY. Ea.r.y on Sunday morning there passed away jn the K.aponga. private (hospital, irom pneumonia supervening on influenza, Mr Allred Webby, a msident oi Itiverlea for 28 years. Mr Webby was born in the Nellaon district in dVlarcilr, 1853, and was ia son of Edward Webby, one of the original settlers of Nelson, who came out to -N ew Zealand in the first- ship with, setthers for that district. As a. young man Mr Webby took up land at Quail Valley, which he fanned a-s <a mixed sheep tuki cropping farm until he came to Tarainaki tin 1899. He was in business in Haiwera until September, 1901, when ho purchased the fiaitm on the riltham Road, where he ha® resided ever sinde. In his early days the deceased gentleman was a great cricketer, and Mr Ernie Cole, the well-known represent a-1 five cricketer, was one of his pupils, being a son of a next-door neighbour. Mr Webby took his full part up to a few years ago in local public affairs, and was a member years ago of the Riverlea _ School Committee and other local bodies. In earlier years he also took his part in public aftaors in l\is neighbourhood in Ndison. Of late years, however, he had lived a retired quiet life though in excellent hoailth until stricken down less than a forl-niighi ago.
