Gratification is expressed in Hawke’s Bay concerning the fact that 2347 cases of apples, of the favourite Delicious and Jonathan varieties, have been shipped direct from Napier to England. It was the first occasion on which fruit had been exported directly from the East Coast port. The fruit was conveyed from Hastings to Napier on a special train of six waggons. It is stated that the consignment would have been larger had there been any allocation for pears, since many Hastings growers have cases in cool store waiting for despatch. On last year's figures, if all Hawke’s Bay fruit were shipped from Napier, instead of from Wellington, the Napier Harbour Board’s coffers would be enriched by £150(1 annually, taking wharfage only into account.
