Insects are often the cause of 'unmatched beacon .lights on the New Zei\rland coast becoming out of order. When Canoe hock light, in the Hauraki Huff, wa.s oxtinguiaiied recently it was discovered that a mason bee had entered the lantern, built a home there and raised a large family. The light is automatic, it Is out during the day, but is lighted in the evening by a small ,pilot light. One of the young insects had crawled over the pilot light and extinguished it. The light on the SancLspit beacon, at Ponui Island, was once extinguished by a swarm of flies which found their way into the lantern. The light on Maro Tiri (Hen and Chickens) Islands was on one occasion visited by a. very small insect which crawled into the feed pipe lor the light and caused carbonisation, with the result that the light, failed. The lights on the beacons have to he ventilated, but every opening is covered with very line gauze. In spite of the precautions taken, some of the insect®, which swarm round the lights at night, find a way of getting inside the lantern or in the mechanism, of the beacon.
