LINER DAMAGED
REACHES PORT SAFELY WITH 300 PASSENGERS ABOARD. CAPTAIN’S SKILFUL HANDLING. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 30. During a dense fog the 17,000-ton Anchor liner Transylvania, when approaching Cherbourg after a six weeks’ Mediterranean cruise, struck a rock off La Coqua, off Cape de ia Hague, early ■on Thursday morning. The accident is attributed to the exceptionally, strong currents prevailing in this particularly dangerous portion of the Normandy coast. The vessel had 300 passengers on board. She sprang a leak and began to list heavily. Assistance was summoned, but by jettisoning 500 tons of oil fuel and ‘bv skilful handling the Transylvania was able to make Cherbourg Harbour without help, and without anv injury to tho passengers or crew. Perfect order was maintained and the resource of Captain Frakine was highly praised by all. It was his last trip in command of the Transylvania. and he was due lo retire on ..reaching England.
