MASTER MARINERS’ COMPANY

MEMBERSHIP EXTENDED TO EMPIRE CAPTAINS. (Australian Press Association —United Service.) LONDON, March 20. The Prince of Wales, presiding at the Honourable Company of Master Mariners’ banquet at the Guildhall, announced that in order to give the company an Imperial character it had been decided to extend the membership by 100, all of whom would be master mariners in the Dominions. The Prince emphasised that the company, which was the youngest among the city guilds, had been welcomed on all sides and had the warmest spot in the nation’s heart, which was proved by the goldsmiths presenting it with a magnificent piece of plate, also Lord Rotliermere’s gift of £IO,OOO and a badge of office, a replica of which the Prince was then wearing. The Prince recalled that the company’s main object included enabling Britain’s merchant navy to establish its status, also the training of young officers. ‘‘l am glad to find many shipowners interested in excellent schemes to assist boys from training -ci'-00l to secure the second mate’s certificate,” he said. Sir Burton Chadwick announced that Lord Inchcape had subscribed £SOOO to the company’s funds.
