A DEFICIT.
IN COUNTRY'S EINANCES. PRIME MINISTER’S ANNOUNCEMENT. (By Tei-eifrapti—Press Association..* INVERCARGILL, March 20. Sir Joseph Ward stated to-night that ;ho revenue would not equal the expen - liture at March 31 and the country vould face a deficit. This could be ;afely negotiated in the coming year, jut it meant that the Government vould have to have the assistance of ;he people to equalise the position in he coming 12 months. He had no anxiety about that and he nentioned it merely to prepare tho ountry for the position that would be lisclosed by the publication of the tatement of accounts very shortly. The short railway lines, Sir Joseph aid, were not paying and nothing furher would be done in extension of hort lines. The) Government would ioneentrate on long lines and main runk railways. The solution of the unemployment U'oblem lay in land settlement and this vould be pressed forward without deay as soon as the Government was in ossession of all the facts.
