NORMANBY POLICE STATION

RELIC OF THE ’EIGHTIES

REPLACED.

Since the early part of November, a section of Mr Arthur Brown’s staff, assisted by employees of various subcontractors, to the average number of twelve artisans, under the foremanship of Mr J. Grant, have been busily engaged in the erection of much-needed new police quarters at Normanby. The result of their labours is a decided improvement upon the old, erected in 1880. The work is now nearing completion and will probably be Handed .over by the contractor during the present or next week. Occupying a corner half-acre section of land, the collection of buildings comprises a modern five-roomed dwelling of pleasing design, a commodious motor garage and storeroom combined, a two-cell watch-house and outbuildings. In addition to three bedrooms, living room and kitchen, the dwelling house contains official quarters for transaction of business by the resident officer and disposition of records. The whole structure is efficiently reticulated with up-to-date hot and cold water service and electrical installation.

The principal detached buildings comprise a two-cell lock-up and a commodious concrete-floored motor garage I with storeroom adjoining. Each loelc-up cell (Bft 6in by lift), substantially built, well ventilated, electrically lighted, and divided by a passage five feet in width, is fitted with the regulation iron-barred "windows and a three-inch door guaranteed to withstand far i greater assaults than are ever likely to |be made upon it.. Three tanks of 600'gallon and one of 400-gallon capacity provide storage for water service to the whole of the buildings and in the absence of municipal sewerage, sanitation is provided for by a septic tank system and casco chemical containers on the premises. Substantial picket and close-boarded boundary and ’divisional fencing of the entire section completes an example of constructive work which reflects the highest credit on the contractor and incidentally converts a hitherto weedy waste into a quite attractive addition to the town’s residential area. Associated with Mr Brown in' the construction and completion of the work were the following sub-contract-ing Hawera firms: Messrs G. Byrne and Co.', Ltd. (joinery), Gyde and Barringer (electric installation), C. Kneebone (plumbing), H. C. Fake (brickwork), and J. O-. Laing (painting and decorating).
