CHANNEL COLLISION MYSTERY.
DUTCH SLIP BADLjI DAMAGED. OTHER VESSEL UNKNOWN. (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, Jan. 29. Efforts are being made to-day to effect temporary repairs to the Dutch steamer Merauits, which was beached in a sinking condition near Hytbe yesterday. The damage to the Merauke was caused by a collision with an unknown steamer during a dense fog which developed in the English diannel yesterday. She was on the final stages of her journey from the Dutch East Indies to Rotterdam, via Liverpool and London. The damage suffered was extensive, and when the liner was observed to go down by the head, the Dungeness lifeboat put out, but- her services were not needed, two tugs taking the Merauke in tow to Dover harbour; blit the danger of the liner foundering necessitated beaching her. At high tide this afternoon the Meriiuko was awash, with heavy seas breaking over her, and she appears to bo in danger of breaking up. The crew have been taken off by a tug from Dover.
