OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. “THE LAST COMMAND.” The cutting of the trans-Siberian railway during the hectic days of the Russian Revolution is depicted in one of the thrilling moments of “The Last Command.'' Paramount’s newest picture starring Etmil Janning-s, admittedly the greatest character actor on the stage or screen to-day. This picture will commence a three night season at the Opera House to-night. The transSiberian railway is the longest railway from point to point in the world, and during its construction, under tlie Czar’s regime, was heralded as one of the engineering feats of the age. It is possible to entrain on the Siberian express in Paris, and a week later, step from the same train at Shanghai, a distance of 8,000 miles. Under the technical direction of Prince Nicholas Ivoblian sky, wl:o was attached to- one of the Czar’s personal regiments prior to the revolution, this incident is thrillingly re-enacted again before the camera. No detail was overlooked by director Josef von Sternberg ni making this scene of the unruly mob as realistic as possible. . - Mr. Janntngs is ably supported in “The Last Command” by Evelyn Brent and William Powell, two artists whose work is rapidly coming to the front. The box plan for the season is at Miss Blake’s sweet shop.
GRAND THEATRE—TO-NIGHT. “HALF A BRIDE.” Esther Ralston’s latest Paramount success, “Half a Bride”, commences a season of two nights at the Grand Theatre to-niglit. Tlie picture contains a very intriguing plot, and is based on the experiences of a pleasure-mad girl, who finds true ha-pinuesis in a trip back t 0 nature. Gary Cooper, the versatile star whose recent successes in “Children of Divorce”, “Doomsday”, “Beau Sabreur” and “Legion of the Condemned”', which have made him a popular screen favourite, has the leading male role and carries it off excellently.
The supporting programme consists of new Paramount Short Features, including Paramount News , from all parts of the world. Christie Comedies and Krazy Kat Cartoons. The orchestra will be in attendance
