DEEP SEA SOUNDINGS.
WORK OF THE DANA. TROUGH OF COOK STRAIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. The Danish research ship Dana! is making a brief stay in Wellington till Thursday. This is her second voyage and the present tour has already occupied over 18 mouths. She' is a. vessel of 360 tons, originally 'built in 1917 as a mine-sweeper. The deepest sounding she ha® found so far is over 5000 fathoms eaist of the Kermadecs. A discovery interesting to New Zealand that a trough formed by the Cook Strait rums in a 1 well-defined direction amid at a much greater depth, far out from the coastline. Soundings of 200 to 500 metres were obtained 200 miles from the shore, north and south of the trough, the depth of which was 2870 metres. The Dana, also found (comparatively shallow alreais of Kaikoura and Banilcs Peninsula.
