Lady Alice Fergusson left for Christchurch last evening. Sir Charles Fergusson leaves for the South Island on January 15. On January 16 they will visit Oamaru, and then proceed to Dunedin, where they will stay till J anuary 25, when they .will leave for Christchurch, spending the night at Timaru on the way. They return to Wellington about the middle- of February, and at the end of February propose to go into residence., at Government House, Auckland. —Press Association.

. Mr [G-. D. Ball, LL-.8., has been ap- - pointed Inspector of Native schools under the Department of Education. Mr’ Ball, who was horn at Wanganui, has been for the past two years an organising teacher under the Taranaki Education Board, prior to which < he was for seven years headmaster of } the 'Grovetown School, Martinbarough, under the Wellington Education Board. iMr Ball served throughout the war, was twice mentioned in dispatches, and Avon his commission on the field. He was in the employ of the Wellington Board whpn Avar was declared.

The death has occurred of Mr. Arthur Eady, aged 73, head of Arthur Eady, Ltd., music warehousemen, which firm was established in 1876. The deceased was a prominent Freemason and a past master of the Prince of Wales Lodge and past senior grand warden of the District Grand Lodge of English Freemasons, states a Press Association message from Auckland.
