ENCOURAGING THE MAORI.
At Nuliaka, where the pakelia and the Maori are farming side by side, much has been done to assist the nn- 4 tives in their farming pursuits, particularly in the matter of improving their stock (says the “Poverty Bay Herald”). In this work the Nuliaka A. and P. Society has set a lead, and each year includes classes reserved for Maori exhibitors. The natives, however, do not confine themselves to competition in these classes, and at times. are found showing the way to their pakeha brethren in the open sections. This was noticed at the recent show, and judges who had adjudicated at previous events there remarked that thev noticed a distinct improvement in the Maori stock. Already the Maori is rivalling the white man in that district, and, if the improvement noticed continues, there is little doubt that the Maori will be able to show the pakeha points in an industry that the pakelia himself introduced into the country.
