SALVATION ARMY CRISIS
GENERAL ASKED TO RETIRE.
BUT TO RETAIN HONOURS. DECISION OF 'HIGH COUNCIL. ..uiU Press Aseoclatiou—By Electric Telegrapo Copyright..) (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, Jan. 9. General Booth has forestalled the High Council’s deposition plan, says the “Daily Mail,” by announcing the appointment of his own council to administer the Salvation Army pending his recovery, with Commissioner Higgins as president and Evangeline and Catherine Booth', two prominent commissioners, as members: The general proposes that the commission shall inquire whether _ any change in the Army’s constitution is desirable. _ . The foregoing is contained m the letter mentioned in the council’s communique. It is gene rail v believed that the High Council had a lengthy sitting, but it is unlikely any vital decision will be arrived at this week. General Booth’s supporters feel that every day’s delay is valuable to their case. Received 10.50 a.m. to-day. L'ONDON, Jan. 10.
The High Council has appointed a deputation of five to visit General Booth and to ask him to retire from office, but to retain the title of General with the honours and dignitaries thereof. The High Council, in statement, declared that as result of deliberations following the reception of the General’s letter, the council had decided to submit the following 'resolution, which was passed: “To -place on record its high appreciation of the General’s life labours and to join with him in gratitude to iGod for the partial restoration of his health.” The council, however, is unable to see the practicability of the General’s suggestion and resolves that it is most unlikely in his advanced age, that he can recover sufficiently to take up the burdens under which he ccdlapsed. It takes the opportunity of requesting him to co-operate with the council in securing the future welfare of the army.
