LONDON, Jan. 9. In view of the frequent and conflicting statements regarding the probable settlement of the- 58 years _ old estrangement , between the Vatican and Italy, the Rome correspondent of the “Daily News” is endeavouring to ascertain the truth. He says negotiations have undoubtedly reached a conclusive phase, enabling the Pope to rule as a, sovereign a small State with 15,000 subjects. Signor Mussolini’s latest speech in the Chamber, announcing great events for the next Parliament, is interpreted as a hint of the epoch-making settlement. The Vatican negotiators were the lawyer Francesco Pacelli, brother of the Papal Nuncio at Berlin, on behalf of the Vatican, and Councillor Dominion Barone on behalf of Italy. The latter died recently after receiving the Pope’s blessing. The negotiations were then practically complete. Signor Pacelli is departing for Jerusalem.
