UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

AN AUCKLAND APPEAL. ißy Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 19. The three Auckland Labour members of Parliament, Messrs. M. J. Savage, W. E. Parry and H. G. R. Mason, are supporting an appeal made by the Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon) that £2OOO promised by the Government for the alleviation of the unemployed situation in Auckland should he given as a grant and not as a subsidy on a similar amount to he found by the City Council.

To-day the three members forwarded the following telegram to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward : “We are pleased to receive your advice stating that £2OOO would be available to relieve- unemployment in Auckland during the Christmas season. We regret, however, that about 8000 men and families are disappointed because of the delay caused by the conditions of the grant. Can you do anything to facilitate matters and relieve the desperate conditions existing here?” No reply has yet been received by tlie Mayor to further representation lie made on Tuesday that a grant should be- made.

To-day there was a queue of unemployed men outside his office awaiting news.
