The good work of Pipe Major McLeod and Drum Major Bell in helping the executive of the Aur-oa Pipe Band during the past year was fitly acknowledged at the annual meeting of the band on Wednesday.

Miss 'Grant, for the past two and a half years nurse for the Elthaih and Stratford Plunket 'Societies, was farewelled by the Eltham committee on Wednesday afternoon, prior to her departure for Durban ('South Africa). Miss Grant was presented by the president (Mrs W. W. Avery) with a gift in appreciation of her valued services on behalf of the Eltham 'Society, every member of which extgnded best washes for her future welfare.

Erie Townsend, the 15-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Townsend, of Eltham, this year shared with Miss Dorothy -Corbett the honour of “dux” of the* Stratford Technical -High School. He gained his proficiency a't the Eltham School when eleven years of age and last year (at 15 years) matriculated at the iStratford 'High School. He is now silting for the university entrance examination. -For a considerable time, as cubmaster, he has been instrumental in keeping alive the Scout movement at Elth'am, where his many friend's wish him further successes in his career and offer congratulations -on his latest achievement.

As a farewell to Matron E. M. Nutsey, of the Hawera Hospital, from the members of the Women’s Division of the -Farmers’ Union, the president, Mrs Carter, presented her with a pretty bbuquet, at the afternoon gathering yesterday. The bouquet was composed of yellow roses, poppies, Yeldt daisies 'and maidenhair fern, with tangerine ribbons and was made by Miss Betts, of Hollybank. Opportunity was taken to Isay good-bye to Miss Nutsey on the eve of her leaving, for Auckland. Her kindly help at all times h’ad been much appreciated, said Mrs Garter in making the presentation. In responding Miss , Nutscy referred to the pleasure and interest -Sister Farquhar had taken in giving her lectures and slie hoped the division would continue its good work. The funeral of .the! late- Mrs A. M. Hannah took place yesterday afternoon and was one o-f the largest ever seen in Manaia (writes our own correspondent). The tribute of respect shown by the presence of relatives and friends from all parts of South Taranaki was a- marked feature and no less than 90 cars followed i-n procession to the cemetery. Mrs Hannah was a very popular young lady, who had, -during a lifetime residence in Manaia, won the affections of everyone who knew her. The wealth of beautiful wreaths which were sent were emblematical of that high regard l . The Rev. R. Miller officiated at the short service in. the house and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. T. Burke, A. H. Christie, C. A. Burke, C. A. L. Smith, H. Holmes and J. E. Young.
