Mr. James A. Patten, at one time the “wheat king” of the United States, died on Saturday of pneumonia (reports the Press Association iiom Chicago). Mrs. Pitts Rivers, daughter of a former Governor-General of Australia, shows a slight improvement, reports the Australian Press Association. She has been seriously id. Senior Sergeant J. Cummings, who completed 17 years of service in the Auckland police force last week, has been promoted to the office of sub-in-spector at Dunedin. Mr. Cummings is just 40 years of age, and he will have the distinction of being the youngest commissioned member of the force m Ihe Dominion. Ladv Alice Fergusson arrived at Auckland from Wellington by train on Saturday morning on her way to spend a holiday on the Three Kings Islands, beyond North Cane (reports the Press Association). With Her Excellency is a nartv of five, including Captain OrrEwing” A.D.C. The party left by the Government steamer Tutanekai. Lady Alice and her friends will camp at Three Kings, and will spend some weeks there bathing, boating, fishing, and sight-seeing.
