FRENCH NAVY.
ESTIMATES INCREASED. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) ('■Times” Cables.) PARIS, Dec. 8. The navy estimates which the Chamber has passed almost Avithout discussion show an increase of nearly £2,252,(XX), of which new ships account for nearly £1,0011,000. Coastal defence, harbours and arsenals also show increases. The Government points out that the defences of Corsica and Tunis are notoriously inadequate. The existing harbours are too small for the neiv large ships and the arsenals require modernising. France does not intend to build the new battleship to which she is entitled under the Washington Treaty. Perhaps she is influenced by Italy’s decision not to exercise a similar right. To attain her present programme France must eventually lay doivn 90,000 tons of light surface ships and 40,000 tons of submarines.
