WASHINGTON, Dec. 7. Mr. F. B. Kellogg to-day defended the anti-war treaty before- doubtful members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

It was declared after the meeting that no indication of direct opposition to the treaty' developed. The most looked for is a possible move for a reservation with respect to the Monroe Doctrine. Air. Kellogg expressed the belief to the committee 1 that the treaty would not interfere with the doctrine. The proponents of the pact are confident of putting it through the Senate unchanged. Air. Kellogg reported to President Coolidge afterwaads that the committee’s attitude appeared favourable. Quickly following the first -sign of opposition in. the Senate to the antiwar treaty, President Coolidge threw his influence actively into the situation, determining to bring about ratification of the pact before he leaves White House. Air. Kellogg visited White House following his appearance before the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate. Upon this visit White- House authorised a statement that a flood of letters was coming to President Coolidge and Air. Kellogg favouring ratification. It was stated that all the letters were uniformly favourable to the treaty; therefore Whit© House judged popular sentiment to he overwhelmingly favourable to ratification. President Coolidge feels that the bulk of the correspondence is wholly spontaneous and not due to organised propaganda. Following the President’s announcement similar mail began to pour into Senators, but apparently the opposition is not necessarily going to be shut down, and the attempt will be continued to delay ratification of the treaty.
