AUROA v. KAPONGA

NARROW WIN BY ONE POINT. Auroa scored a very close victory over Kaponga by one point, on the latter club’s green. In tho following details Auroa players are mentioned first: Davies, Duff, Corey, Jolinstone 22 v. l’ascoe, Guy, Dawson, Hawkins 26. Biclieno, Bigham, Bradford, Kilpatrick 26 v. Payne, Williams, Thurston, Tyaclc 21. Totals: Auroa, 48; Kaponga, 47. On the eighth head Hawkins’ score stood two> to Johnstone’s 25, the latter running well into the lead with a six. The ninth, tenth and eleventh heads gave Hawkins a good recovery with 1, 4, 4. With a sequence of twos and ones he assumed the lead on the twenty, second head, the scores then standing at 22 to 21. Johnstone improved his position with one in the next head and failed to further increase. Hawkins ran out a winner with three and one oik the twenty-fourth and last heads. Tyack’s rink fought out a closely contested game, although scoring on only eight heads (including a live) against a consistently successful and slow-scoring team who “chalked up” on no less than 17 heads. Included in this club's membership are several beginners who give considerable promise and it may fairly be said of them that they all show a marked improvement on each successive visit to tho green. Prominent among these “tyros” may be mentioned A. Melville, T. Jones, A. J. Herbert, S. Death, A. Guy, and T. Howard. With such strong backing by novitiates a spirit of optimism has been engendered in tho more experienced section of the membership in regard to. the future playing strength of the club. Thurston Ferns. —During the weekend, the Thurston Ferns holders, T. Howard, A. Guy, G. W. S. Bell, and J. Stevens (26) successfully defended their rights against A. Melville, T. Jones, J. A. Dawson and J. A. Herbert ,22) in a fairly even contest, in which each rink scored on an equal number of heads to the twenty-fourth, w'ben the holders led by 25 to 22. Howard “burned” the twenty-fifth. Pairs Tournament. —The annual pairs tournament, in which play will commence this v/eek, will be contested by the pairs, in games qf fifteen heads, on the usual two-life system. Two games will bo played in each w’eek. Following is the first round draw 7 : Oran and Jones v. Thurston and Charters ; Tyack and Taw; v. Anderson and Tait; Davison and Melville v. Stevens and Howard; Payne and Guy v. Daw r,son and Herbert; Williams and Death v. Bell and Pascoe. Gold medals, presented by the club, will be competed for. The winning combination in the 192728 season w r as Messrs J. J. Paw r son and 11. El. Williams.

Singles Championship.—Nominations for the club singles championship, for which play commences this week, closed with a total of ten, namely : A. E’. Anderson, J. A. Dawson, S. Death, A. J. Herbert, T. Howard, 11. Law, J. Stevens A. V. Tait, »T. H. Tyack, and R. E. Williams. Mr J. H. Tyack was last season’s club champion. Value of top-dressing—ln response to a liberal top-dressing in June last, the green is now' in splendid order and reflects the highest credit on the groundsman, Mr A. J. Herbert. ’Without exception, visiting bowlers this season have expressed their appreciation of its playing qualities, which they aver compare favourably wth those of much older greens.

CONTESTS IN NORTH TARANAKI

The bowling competitions were continued in ideal weather conditions all through the North Taranaki district during the week-end, and the various inter-club competitions were advanced a further stage.
