Mr. A. L. Thompson, of the Wanganui branch of the Agricultural Department, is at present in Hawera, and is a guest at the Central Hotel. Mr. J. B. Richards, of Stratford, was a passenger for Wellington by the mail train this morning to attend the dairy conference to-morrow. Messrs P. O. Veale and G. Duncan left by car this morning for Wellington to attend the dairy conference which is to be held on Friday. Colonel Sandall, formerly of the Sydney “War Cry,” and recently of Atlanta (U.S.A.), has been gazetted as editor of the ‘‘War Cry” in Wellington (N.Z.). Sir Janies A Ren was yesterday granted 'leave of absence fo>r the remainder of the session by the Legislative Council on account of his illness, reports the- Press Association. Mrs W. R. Wilson, Dominion Commissioner of Girl Guides, has received advice that Sir Rlo.bert and Lady Baden-Powell will visit New Zealand in January, 1980, and will attend the Dominion Girl Guide Camp to be held that month. The death of Mr Thomas. Baker, founder of the firm of Baker and Rou.se, with Kodak interests in Australia, is announced. Mr Baker was a leader in philanthropic work during the war and w-ais president of the Melbourne, Rotary Club. Sir Hugh Po-ynter, eliairman in Australia. of Baldwin’s, Ltd., the Faigli-sh. iron and steel firm, arrived in Auckland by the Maunganui on a visit to New Zealand, states a Press .Association message. Two prominent young Englishmen, the Hon. H. C. H. Bathurst, second son of Lord BJiedisloe, of Lydney Park, Gloucestershire, England, and Mr E. C. Lysa-ght’s, a son of the director of Lysaght’s. Limited, a large English manufacturing firm of sheet meit-all, are at present visiting Auckland 1 . They have already spent a. few weeks in the Dominion, and are delighted with their experience. Mr Bathurst _ stated they spent a few days in fishing on Lake Taupe, and he caught 20 of the largest trout he had ever seen. Mr. T. M. Ball, District Engineer to the Public Works Department, at Stratford, was farewelled on the eve of his transfer to Otago. The mayor presided and there were over twenty chairmen of county councils, mayors, engineers, and town clerics present. The speakers were Messrs C. Belcher (Eltham), Connett (.New Plymouth), North (Stratford), Griffiths (New Plymouth),' R. Stuart (Inglewood County Council), A. J. Hansen (Waimate West County ’Council), 111. Clarke (engineer to New Plymouth Borough Council), N. C Fokoes (engineer to Clifton county), P. Skoglund (Stratford town clerk), S. Vickers (Taranaki County Council), S. A. Ward (Stratford Borough Council), A. T. Moore (on behalf of the Press of Taranaki), and P. J. Fennell (of the Wanganui branch of the Public Works Department). _ Mr. Belcher presented Mr. ‘ Ball with a handsome silver tea service on a silvermounted oak tray inscribed “To Mr. and Mrs. Ball.” In doing so he wished the recipient every prosperity and “a really good time in the future. ’
