HAWERA CLUB CONTESTS. SEASON’S SERIES OPENED. The season’s competitions! for the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club trophies commenced with a series of seven events on the show grounds last evening. Commencing at six o’clock, the evening gatherings are to be continued on Wednesday, November 21, and each Wednesday thereafter until Christmas. Included with the progressive competitions this year is a class for primary schoolboys. A trophy is being provided, and points for it are to count three, two, and one for first, second and third placings respectively. The first event in this series attracted a good field last evening. The. meeting was marked by the first appearance of the javelin throw champion, S. A. Lay, since his return from the Olympic Games. With only three throws, using the Olympic standard javelin and without extending himself, he registered one fine effort of 190 feet.

Worley (Hawera Main Scnool) 1, Noel Cann (Coiivent) 2, Harvey Thomson (Tawhiti) 3. Half-mile Flat Handicap.—C. Sturrock (45yds) 1, J. Reading (80yds) 2, C. Campbell (80yds) 3. There were nine starters. Won by 15 yards, with a similar distance between second and; third. Time, 2.7. 1 , Half-mil© Cycle Handicap.—J. A. Dykes (15yds) 1, F. C. Brown (scr) 2, S. IV. Kelsen (45yds) 3. Dykes, with Brown in close attendance, took the lead with 400 yards to go, _ and took first place by two lengths, with Kelsen five lengths back, about 100 yards clea 'of F. Richter (80yds), who was the only other starter. Time, 1.21. Two Miles Cycle Handicap.—J. A. Dykes' (scr) 1, F. C. Brown' (scr) 2, S. IV. Kelsen (190yds) 3. The only starters. The back markers caught Kelsen at the finish of the first mile, and the three rode in a bunch till the final hell, «run Brown made a break.
