FRONTIER FORTIFICATIONS.
THE PAINLEVE INTERVIEW. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph ' Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received 12.10 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Oct, 8. A message from Paris asserts that M. Painleve confirms the interview oi October 2 regarding the fortification of the Italian frontier, with the exception of the phrase “gun for gun, ’ which was inadvertently attributed to him. “With our Italian neighbours hastening fortification on their frontier, it .is only commonseiise that we should keep up with them,” declared the French Minister of War (M 3. Painleve) in the course of a striking interview with the British United Press on October 2. “Italy began the race all the way from the Mediterranean to Mont Blanc. We will match them gun for gun. It is an easier frontier to defend than our German frontier. We realise the consequences of failure to keep up with Italy.” It is explained that many passes are defended by eternal snows, the remainder being made to bristle with guns costing millions of pounds.
