YESTERDAY’S WEATHER.
DUST DEPOSITED BY LAST NIGHT’S RAIN. Yesterday’s dull weather culminated in an electrical storm in the. evening and a fairly heavy fall of rain. This morning it was reported from two quarters that a. deposit of fine reddish-brown dust had been left by the rain. Mr G. Shadier, of Caledonia Street, brought to ■the ‘ ‘Star ” Office this morning a sample of the dust collected from his glasshouses, and Mr V. AV. Nowell also reported that there was a light coating of similar dust on out-door objects at an early hour this morning. The latter, while disclaiming any intention of putting forward a theory to. account for the deposit, stated that the dust was similar in colour and texture to the dust which covered potatoes he recently imported from. Australia. These reports are of more than ordinary interest in view of the experiences of Sydney and Invercargill over the week-end. The cables reported that a heavy dust-storm, coining from the interior, had passed over Sydney on Sunday, and at Invercargill it was noted that after rain on .Saturday night various objects were spotted with red dust. Yesterday the weather was strangely dull in Hawera, and in some- quarters the .peculiar golden-brown light which came through the clouds was attributed to the presence of dust in the upper atmosphere. The deposit of dust found this morning lends colour to that theory.
