ENTERTAINMENTS.

OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. “STOP THAT MAN.” ARRIVAL OF SOUTHERN CROSS Arthur Lake and Barbara Kent, Universal’s two popular junior stars, will be seen together for the first time in the farcical comedy “Stop That Man!” which will open at the Opera House tonight. This is a story of youth’s desire to grow up in order to accomplish something in the world. The spirit of youth pervades the picture. Nat Ross, the famous director of “The Collegians,” was responsible for this production, and no one questions his ability to put liveliness,_ sparkle, and humour into every situation. Never has a better comedy of adolescent love been filmed. Lake and Miss Kent have long been favourites with motion picture audiences, and the combination of both in the same film guarantees an evening of the finest entertainment. “Stop That Man” is a comedy of a younger brother who wants to get on the police force. Instead of becoming an officer of the law, he almost becomes a crook. A special added attraction on the programme will be the arrival of the Southern Cross at Christchurch. The box plan is at Miss Blake’s sweet shop.

OPERA HOUSE. NEIXT WEDNESDAY. “THE GAUCHO'.”. Once again Douglas) Fairbanks is seen in a tale of treasure, combat, intrigue, adventure and love, this time m “The Gaucho,” which will open a two night season at the Opera House on Wednesday, Laid amid the picturesque and -beautiful scenery of the Andes, the story of “The Gaucho’’ is woven round the colourful career of a romantic bandit leader who sweeps across the pampas in search of adventure. In the heart of the mountains a shrine has been built on the scene of a miracle. Here preside an ancient priest and lovely girl known as the “girl of the miracle.” They are visited yearly by thousands of pilgrims. From his distant capital Ruiz, a usurper, hearing of the City of the Miracle, sends his lieutenant to confiscate its wealth. Simultaneously the gaucho Crosses the Andes with his riders, joined en route bv a madcap mountain girl. In disguise the gaucho enters the city and manages to assume control. He visits the shrine, where he becomes strangely impressed by the padre and “the- girl of the miracle.” In the meantime a renegade follower of the gaucho has dismissed the band by a false message, so the leader is deserted and an easy prey for the usurper’s lieutenant, with whom the renegade has connived. The mountain girl, still misconstruing the sympathies of the shrine girl, betrays the gaucho into the hands of Ruiz, now come in person ±o capture and execute the outlaw. Determined later to effect his release and undo the harm she has wrought, the mountain girl rides to bring the gauohOs to attack the city. A thrilling series of encounters follow’., and makes a happy ending possible. The mountain girl is played by Lupe Velez, a new actress, whose characterisation in this difficult role has been everywhere praised by critics, while Eve Southern is seen as the “girl of the miracle.” The box plan is at Miss Blake’s.
