The gang war in Sydney, which has been quiescent for several months, was renewed last night when a gunman stepped from a 'taxi and shot down a pedestrian at the corner of Jj’oveaux and Terry Streets, Surry Hills. The victim was William Dillon, aged 56, who was sent to hospital with two bullet wounds. The doctors nope he will recover. The police are searching for the taxi. Apparently apart from the occupan'fcs of the cab only one eye-witness was present. He was a business man mamed Carrington, who was walking along Foveaux Street. He wag actually between the gun and Dillon before the shots were fired. A man with his head bandaged sprang front the car, walked towards Carrington, and as the latter moved aside, the man said: “Now I’ve got you.” A shot rang out. Dillon, who was behind Carrington, sagged to the ground. A second shot was fired as he fell.

The gunman then re-entered the cab, which sped away into Elizaheth Street. All passed in a few seconds. Carrington turned to aid the injured.man, who was bleeding from the mouth and chest, and the assailant was gone.
