HAWERA MUNICIPAL BAND.

CONTEST EFFORTS. SACRED CONCERT. There was a good audience at the sacred concert organised on behalf ol the contest expenses fund of the Hawera Municipal Band on Sunday evening in the Opera House, and all the items were given a good reception. The. hand played the following selections: March. '“Avondale” (Verner); overture, “Pique Dame” (Suppe); triple tongue cornet duo, “Polacca The Two Juliets” (Orel Hume), Corporal Swan and Bandsman Smith; exhibition march, “Brilliant” . (Orel Hume); selection, “Meistensingers (Wagner). All the numbers' were /played in good style and with nice crisp attack and release, hut in the Wagner selection there was. a slight weakness in the soprano that- rather unsettled the other parts of the hancL The work generally was the subject of very favourable comment. Miss Johnson sang “When Song is Sweet” (Gertrude Sans Soiiei), and for an encore “Vale” /Kennedy Russell). Mr. J. D. McQuill’s number was the beautiful Handelian song “Where’er you walk,” and when recalled “Passinc Bv” (Purcell). Miss N. Kent recited in pood style “The Gift of Tritemius” (WhittierL and for an enco v e Thomas Bracken’s “Not Understood.” The collection totalled £4 17s 6<L hut after expenses are paid there will be only a. few shillings for the fund. THE SHOP DAY. A very useful result was secured by la ladies’ committee comprising the t wives of members of the Hawera Municipal Band on Saturday, when they held a shop day on behalf of the contest expenses fund. The takings totalled about £ls. The members organising and managing the effort were Mesdames Pearce, Hawkins, Ogden, Fox, Crutch, Crowder and Croucher. They are very grateful to the public for cordial sunno>t and to Mrs. Collins for use of the shop in Union Street.
